Piston Cylinder sets
Airpot Corp’s piston and cylinder kits make great building blocks for engineers who have need for customized mechanical or pneumatic devices. The kits feature Airpot’s borosilicate glass cylinder and graphite piston material technology which allows the use of extremely tight tolerances to achieve a high precision fit and control of leak while offering a seal-less, self -lubricating pneumatic or light-load bearing device. Each piston and cylinder set is individually matched for optimal performance. The ultra low friction pistons will respond to single gram forces and low pressures of less than 0.2 psi. Stiction is virtually eliminated, meaning nearly identical starting and running friction, and providing movement that is uniformly smooth and consistent from the start and throughout the device’s full stroke cycle.
Airpot piston and cylinder kits are unaffected by extreme temperature variations, run clean and do not contaminate surrounding components. No piston seals are required, and there are no liquids or lubricants to leak. Materials used are capable of exceedingly high cycle rates. They do not heat up or materially change under conditions of rapid and/or continuous cycling and have a life-span of multi-millions of cycles.
Innovative designers use Airpot piston and cylinder kits as linear bearings, vacuum pickups, inertia sensors, portable piston pumps, position sensors, spool valves, flow indicators, pressure sensors, dispensers, pneumatic calibration devices, Stirling Engine power pistons, and for many other demanding applications. Airpot piston and cylinder kits exhibit very low mass, no deterioration or change in performance due to age or non-use, have the ability to move linearly and rotationally simultaneously, and use a clear, see-through cylinder. When driven by pressurized air, maximum performance can be enhanced when used in conjunction with Airpot’s precision FFR low pressure filter/regulator products.
The cylinders are available in bore sizes ranging from 0.220” to 1.75”, and lengths from the desired stroke plus 0.325” to the desired stroke plus 0.880”. All models exhibit friction of less than 1 gram (in the absence of side loads).
Airpot Corp. pneumatic actuators have an outstanding ability to perform functions that go far beyond conventional actuators that can only provide a motive force. Employing our borosilicate glass cylinder and graphite piston technology, Airpot Actuators have amazing performance properties with respect to friction, cleanliness, and temperature range. They are light weight, compact, use no lubricants, and the piston/rod assemblies have very low mass. This unusual range of characteristics give our actuators performance capabilities that allow them to be used in uncommon, even novel ways that would be impossible with conventional air cylinders. For example, in addition to uses involving response to pressure or vacuum, Airpot Actuators can also provide functions involving displacement of a volume, such as for pumping, measuring, sensing, and indicating pressure or vacuum changes. Furthermore, since the cylinder is clear glass, the Airpot Actuator can even be used to provide a see-through, visual reference for pressure related volume and stroke changes.
Of course, Airpot actuators are equally superior to conventional cylinders for applying a precise force, a repeatable motive or counterbalancing force, applying a gentle or precise holding or squeezing force (as low as a few grams) and for actuation with uniform motion at almost any speed. They are ideal for requirements involving the need to move something slowly and smoothly, even over distances less than 0.1 inch, or to cycle at very high speeds- up to 100 cps.
